What to Bring Into the Woods On a Hike

On a lengthy hike in the woods, it’s important to bring:

  • Sturdy shoes
  • A stout staff
  • A fabulous handbag

Down By the River

Reflections are cool.

Pumpkin Portraiture

People carving pumpkins.

On the Beach, in Los Angeles

I found myself on the beach in Los Angeles, in a howling windstorm that made the sky a funny color.

I love the beach in L.A. No matter how crowded the millions of people seem, and no matter how many of them choose to go to the beach, the beach is always infinitely huge and empty.

Just above the horizon, to the right of the lifeguard tower, is a Coast Guard HH-65C “Dolphin” helicopter, apparently rescuing sailors from a sinking ship, and making a gentle whining sound audible even at this distance.

As is traditional in L.A., one can’t tell if it’s a real disaster at sea, or if they’re just shooting a movie.

Ghost Crab Hunting At The Beach

Duck, North Carolina. Long, long exposures at night.

400mm portraiture

It turns out that a telephoto lens has two huge advantages for portraiture (never mind the stupid sports photography):

1. Heavy bokeh. People who are five feet behind the subject are grossly out of focus.

2. Your victims don’t notice you, because you’re 75m away, and so they act normal.

At the Père-LaChaise Cemetery

Lots of dignified dead folks.

More Bugs on Flowers

Several bugs on flowers, from Monet’s gardens, and a farm near Versailles.

Interesting Large Mechanical Thing

See if you can figure out what this large machine is for.

At the Ferme de Gally, in France

Lots of flowers here.
